For Immediate Release

The Millicent Rogers Museum’s (MRM) Board of Trustees is seeking a new Executive Director.  Dr. Caroline Jean Fernald, who has served as Executive Director since January of 2016, announced her planned departure with the museum’s board and staff in early July and a public announcement was shared at the museum’s Turquoise Gala in early August.  Dr. Fernald has accepted a position as Executive Director of the Phoebe A. Hearst Museum of Anthropology at UC-Berkeley and will be resigning from the MRM on September 7.

“Dr. Fernald will be sorely missed at the museum and in Taos” said Board President, Randy Phillips. “The energy and enthusiasm she has brought to the position of Executive Director has been invaluable to our recent success. We wish her all the best in her new position!”

During Dr. Fernald’s tenure as Executive Director of the MRM, the museum more than doubled major gifts and grants, accepted gifts to its collection valued at over $750,000, increased the rotation of its permanent collection, raised funds through a match challenge for the museum’s first permanent endowment, secured annual distributions from a private trust for the next 20 years, and attained reaccreditation by the American Alliance of Museums.

According to Dr. Fernald, “Working with the dedicated board, staff, volunteers, and donors at the Millicent Rogers Museum has been such a rewarding experience.  I am proud of what we have accomplished together and even more proud of the support the museum has received from the Taos community.  The MRM is a unique museum and I consider myself to be very fortunate to have been a part of it.”

Trustee George Bartel and Curator Carmela Quinto will be fulfilling interim leadership roles at the museum while the Board of Trustees conducts the search for a new Executive Director.

In addition to a new Executive Director search, the museum’s Store Manager Nancy Colvert, who has worked at the museum since 2007, will be retiring in the fall.  A search for a new Store Manager is currently underway, and two new part-time positions in Admissions and Development are available.  More information about these positions can be found on the museum’s website at

The Millicent Rogers Museum is open from 10-5 (MST) Tuesday through Sunday from November to March and is open every day from April to October.  In line with the museum’s mission to support the local community, admission to the museum is free on Sundays for Taos County residents (special events not included).  Visit or call (575) 758-2462 for more information about admission, events, holiday closures, and exhibits.
