Exotic Parrots in the Desert Southwest
Saturday February 22 - February 21, 2010
The exotic colorful parrot was brought up from the Natives coming from the regions of present-day Central America and Mexico. They were traded live and their feathers were also prized possessions for the Natives as far north as the plains.
These beautiful birds are divine figures in the cultures of the Southwestern Pueblos. They are included in clans and in some cases considered a symbol for fertility.
The exhibition is an intimate look at some of the parrots in the collection. You will discover them painted on pottery, inlayed on jewelry along with a fine katsina deity.
