Nuestra Senora:  A Tradition of Devotion to Mary

For centuries, religious icons have helped worshipers focus on devotion to their faith.  As intercessor and ally, Nuestra Senora has become one of the most powerful and popular of all religious icons in New Mexico.  These images from the Museum collection are examples of those most frequently found in Northern New Mexico.

Intercessor and ally, Nuestra Señora is a powerful and popular image in New Mexico.  Venerated and represented under many names, non-practitioners might think they refer to many different saints rather than simply various advocations of the same individual.

Nuestra Señora is often depicted with merciful as well as sorrowful images.  Such recurrent themes were easily identifiable to early Spanish settlers who likewise struggled to adapt to the harshness and rigors of life in early New Mexico.
