Squash Blossoms and Stars was developed for the Museum by Barbara Barrett. Dear Teacher, Parent and Student: New Mexico has a long tradition of jewelry making. From the ancient Anasazis to the Navajo and current Pueblo residents, working with silver, turquoise and coral has always been a creative as well as spiritual endeavor. This site seeks to teach history, culture, art appreciation and spiritual respect to students in 4th through 6th grades but the curriculum is easily adaptable to younger or older students. Our goal is to encourage learning through related research activities and handcraft projects that facilitate the seven multiple intelligences. The activities and projects are listed separately for the ease of teacher and parent. For students, a symbol appears on each information page where a corresponding related activity or project is suggested. We hope these exercises will serve as preparation for a richer, more meaningful experience when visiting the exceptional jewelry collection at Millicent Rogers Museum of Northern New Mexico in Taos.
